[synopsis] => Let us go then, you and I, on a journey from the tyranny of beauty to the freedom of truth. Ravishing is a memoir about my quest for an authentic life. It could only have been written in the age of #MeToo, though many of my life-lessons came decades before.
For years I resisted the growing realization that my so called, 'glamorous life,' was actually a dysfunctional mess. When I stopped fighting reality I suffered less and began to practice radical acceptance. Radical acceptance means completely and totally accepting something (in my case, reality) from the depths of your soul, heart and mind.
I remember how it all started. At the age of 17, an unholy alliance of DNA and steroids reversed my anorexia and turned me into a 5'10" hourglass. My transformation spurred the offer of a plum part on a TV show, which led to early successes in Hollywood. I was featured in such movies as Barbara Streisand's Funny Girl and Dean Martin's The Ambushers and worked with directors ranging from William Wyler to Elia Kazan.
My first starring role came when I was 23, directed by Terence Young (Wait until Dark, Dr. No, From Russia with Love and Thunderball). I was cast as the Amazon queen in The War Goddess, a sword and sandal epic, shot in Rome in 1972. This was more than half a century before Amazon Princess Diana, the heroine of the blockbuster, Wonder Woman, became an archetype for feminists and survivors in the global #MeToo movement.
By day, as Queen of the Amazons, I dominated the males around me. By night, I was inducted into the underworld of Hollywood, where I became the plaything of prominent men. I learned an age-old lesson, that men want more than to appreciate beauty, they want to possess it. And in those days, The Los Angeles Times called me "the most beautiful woman in the world." I discovered that the mavens of Hollywood are particularly hard wired to exploit young hopefuls.
I was grabbed in elevators, below the table in restaurants and in dressing rooms. Bill Cosby groped me and leered under my mini-skirt. Richard Harris fondled me in an elevator, with only a thin layer of chambray between his large hands and my breasts. James Bond's fingers walked up my thigh, until his wife stopped him. Omar Sharif broke into my dressing room, dropped to his knees and kissed my bare midriff. Beyond these violations, Roman Polanski drugged me with Quaaludes and champagne, before he raped my inert body.
A Salvadoran Shaman helped me to escape the grasp of an assassin and death threats, so that I could find a safe place to live. I found sanctuary on the 'Lost Coast of California.' But it was in the "true north" of Mendocino that I embraced my calling as a hypnotherapist and where, I finally found myself.
Ravishing comprises a twenty-year period of my life in Rome, Paris, Tokyo, Acapulco, Los Angeles and both sides of the demilitarized zone in Korea. This narrative addresses the question, which has confounded the male species for centuries, "What Do Women Really Want?" The answer lies within...and within its pages.
